Learn more about Apigenin

What is Apigenin?

Apigenin (4′,5,7-trihydroxyflavone), found in many plants, is a natural product belonging to the flavone class that is the aglycone of several naturally occurring glycosides. It is a yellow crystalline solid that has been used to dye wool. It was first isolated from chamomile in 1914.

Apigenin is found in small amounts in many fruits and vegetables, but parsley, celery, celeriac, and chamomile are the most common sources. Apigenin is particularly abundant in the flowers of chamomile plants, constituting 68% of total flavonoids. Dried parsley can contain about 45mg/g, while dried chamomile flower contains about 3-5mg/g Apigenin.

The apigenin content of fresh parsley is reportedly 215.5mg/100g, which is much higher than that of the next best food source, green celery hearts, providing 19.1mg/100g.

How does Apigenin work?

As a flavonid, research has found Apigenin to have anti-inflammatory properties through inhibition of the COX-2 enzyme. Research shows very potent anti-tumor and anti-cancer properties and supression of most types of cancer, including leukemia, prostate, breast, stomach, bladder, ovary, lung, and thyroid cancer. Apigenin has been shown to generally promote cellular health.

The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of Apigenin also have been shown to enhance cognition and thereby booost brain function. In mice with Alzheimer’s disease, it showed improved memory and lesser learning deficits.

In additon to the above, Apigenin modulates GABA receptors in the brain, which promotes relaxation and works as a natural anti-depressant. It furthermore has been proven to lower blood pressure and exhibit anti-diabetic effects.

In addition to the anti-inflammatory function, research has found other anti-aging features, with Apigenin shown to inhibit CD38, which increases NAD+ levels and reduces age-related decline in testosterone levels.
