Learn more about Citicoline

What is Citicoline?

Citicoline (INN), also known as cytidine diphosphate-choline (CDP-Choline) or cytidine 5'-diphosphocholine, is an intermediate in the generation of phosphatidylcholine from choline, a common biochemical process in cell membranes.

Citicoline is naturally occurring compound in the cells of human and animal tissue, particularly in the organs. The foods with the highest volume of citicoline are meats and fish, especially animal offals such as liver, brain, and others.

How does Citicoline work?

Citicoline supports memory and cognitive performance.

Citicoline is a substance that is naturally found in the body. It is commonly used to treat a number of brain injuries and illnesses. For quite some time, it has been used for strokes, vascular dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and general aging of the brain. The body is using it to create and repair cell membranes and lower the presence of free radicals.

Researchers have found evidence that citicoline can also be used to treat glaucoma. In a study conducted on rats, after three weeks of oral intake, researchers found that Citicoline significantly reduced vision loss, boosted sharpness, and improved activity in the visual portion of the brain. The breakdown of nerves was slowed by 74%. These benefits remained for three weeks, even after treatment was stopped.

Clinical research shows that providing your body with more Citicoline helps it make more phospholipid membrane components, which is critical for healthy brain function.

It is important to increase cell membrane turnover in the brain, as this helps membrane fluidity and plasticity, fortifies cell membranes and structures, and enhances neuron communication. Phospholipid turnover supports the structural integrity of neurons, supporting their function. This includes critical brain functions such as memory. The brain loses phospholipids as we age. Citicoline can help enhance those phospholipid levels, ultimately supporting memory and brain health over time.

Citicoline supports phosphatidylcholine formation and helps protect the brain neurons. Phosphatidylcholine is a major component of brain tissue, making up about 30% of our brain's phospholipids, which maintain the main building blocks for cell membrane integrity and control cell communication. If phospholipids are lacking, brain cell function can slow down.

In a clinical study, 6 weeks of Citicoline supplementation (0.5g daily) increased energy reserves and utilization in the brain. The study showed a 14% increase in ATP (cellular energy). Citicoline also supports mitochondrial health. This is crucial for brain fuel, as the brain uses 20% of the body's energy (at rest).

As Citicoline supports memory and mental energy, it enhances learning ability. In clinical trials, Citicoline improved verbal learning and extended cognitive performance, focus, and concentration.
