Product overview

Pterostilbene is a stilbenoid similar to Resveratrol. It is found in foods such as almonds, blueberries, and grape leaves. As a supplement, it boasts benefits similar to those of Resveratrol. It serves as an antioxidant, is neuroprotective, has anti-cancer features, and has also been described as cardioprotective, analgesic, anti-atherosclerosis, anti-aging, and anti-diabetic. Compared to Resveratrol, however, it has been shown to stay in the organism 7 times longer, and shown to be 10 times more efficient in suppressing cancer.

Learn more about Pterostilbene

What is Pterostilbene?

Pterostilbene is a stilbenoid chemically related to Resveratrol. In plants, it serves a defensive phytoalexin role.

Pterostilbene is found in almonds, blueberries, grape leaves and vines, as well as heartwood.

How does Pterostilbene work?

Resveratrol and Pterostilbene exhibit many similarities in pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, neuroprotective (improved cognition, treatment of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders), anti-cancer, cardioprotective (blood pressure control), analgesic, anti-atherosclerosis, anti-aging, anti-diabetic (blood sugar control), anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity functions.

As an antioxidant, Pterostilbene is beneficial for the liver, heart, and eyes.

Pterostilbene is about 4 times easier to absorb than Resveratrol due to enhanced membrane permeability, bioavailability, and biological potency, which makes it more efficient than Resveratrol.

It also has been shown to stay in the organism 7 times longer than Resveratrol.

The efficiency of Pterostilbene in suppressing cancer is approximately 10 times that of Resveratrol.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pterostilbene?

Pterostilbene is a natural polyphenol and a structural analog of resveratrol, known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is found in small amounts in certain fruits, particularly blueberries, and is often used in supplements for its potential benefits in cellular health, cognitive function, and longevity.

What is Pterostilbene used for?

Pterostilbene is primarily used for:

  • Cellular Health & Longevity – Activates sirtuins, proteins associated with aging and DNA repair,
  • Cognitive Function – Supports brain health by protecting neurons from oxidative stress,
  • Cardiovascular Support – Helps maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels,
  • Metabolic Health – May aid in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity,
  • Anti-Inflammatory Effects – Reduces oxidative damage and inflammation in the body.
How much Pterostilbene should I take?

The recommended daily dose of pterostilbene is 50–150 mg, depending on individual health goals. Higher doses may be used in certain research contexts, but for supplementation, staying within the recommended range is advised.

Hansen Supplements includes a free measuring spoon for accurate dosing. If more precision is needed, a precision scale is available here. Always consult a healthcare provider before adjusting dosage.

What foods contain Pterostilbene?

Pterostilbene is naturally found in small amounts in:

  • Blueberries (the richest source),
  • Grapes,
  • Cranberries,
  • Almonds,
  • Some tree bark species (e.g., Indian Kino tree).

However, dietary sources provide minimal amounts, making supplementation a more effective option for achieving noticeable benefits.

How does Pterostilbene compare to Resveratrol?

Pterostilbene and resveratrol are both polyphenols with similar chemical structures, but pterostilbene is more bioavailable in the body. This means it is absorbed and retained more effectively, potentially making it more potent at lower doses. While both compounds support longevity and cellular health, pterostilbene has stronger metabolic and anti-inflammatory effects, whereas resveratrol is better studied for cardiovascular benefits.

Is Pterostilbene better than Resveratrol?

Neither is strictly "better"—they serve complementary functions.

  • Pterostilbene is more bioavailable and better for metabolic and cognitive health.
  • Resveratrol is better studied for heart health and longevity.

Many people take both together to maximize their benefits.

Is Pterostilbene safe?

Yes, pterostilbene is generally well-tolerated when taken within recommended dosages. Studies suggest it is safe for long-term use, though high doses may have an impact on cholesterol levels. Consult a healthcare provider if you are taking medication or have existing health conditions.

Can I take Pterostilbene every day?

Yes, pterostilbene is safe for daily use when taken within the recommended dosage. Daily supplementation supports consistent antioxidant protection and cellular health.

Does Pterostilbene help with aging?

Yes, pterostilbene is believed to activate sirtuins, proteins that regulate aging-related processes such as DNA repair and cellular function. It may also help protect against oxidative damage, which contributes to aging.

When should I take Pterostilbene?

Pterostilbene is best taken with food containing healthy fats to improve absorption. Some prefer taking it in the morning for cognitive benefits, while others take it at night as part of an anti-aging regimen.
