Product overview

L-Citrulline (H2NC(O)NH(CH2)3CH(NH2)CO2H) is an organic compound and amino acid found in watermelon. As a supplement, it is said to improve the ability of blood vessels to widen, correcting blood pressure and addressing risk of heart disease. L-Citrulline may also give rise to increased growth hormone spurts, as well as address erectile dysfunctions.

Learn more about L-Citrulline

What is L-Citrulline?

The organic compound Citrulline is an α-amino acid. Its name is derived from citrullus, the Latin word for watermelon. Although named and described by gastroenterologists since the late 19th century, it was first isolated from watermelon in 1914 by Japanese researchers Yotaro Koga and Ryo Odake and further codified by Mitsunari Wada of Tokyo Imperial University in 1930.

It has the formula H2NC(O)NH(CH2)3CH(NH2)CO2H.

How does L-Citrulline work?

Improving the ability of the blood vessels to widen can potentially improve blood pressure and blood flow to tissues.

Studies have shown that, when people who have heart disease or are at risk of heart disease consume L-Citrulline for more than seven days, the ability of their arteries to widen improves.

Citrulline supplements may decrease blood pressure, particularly in those with high blood pressure.

Citrulline can increase the rise in growth hormone (GH) seen after exercise, as well as increase the performance itself.

The amino acid may also improve erections in men with erectile dysfunction, likely through its ability to increase blood flow.
